Coal, Cotton and Canals

What You’ll See

Join a fun factual walk exploring the secrets of the past of Astley Green and the surrounding villages, the canal and Chat Moss.

At Astley Green, we will walk through the village and there will be an opportunity to look around the museum, see the last Pit Head Gear of the Lancashire Coalfield and take a break in the museum cafe

Using maps and visual aids, we'll take a look at the village and hear its history. We'll learn about nearby treasure hoards, headless bodies, skulls of Martyrs, mining disasters and the Miners Cathedral. We also explore the impact that the canal, coal and cotton had on local men, women and children.

The tour content is fun and lively and is aimed at teenagers and upwards. If you feel your under 12-year-old child would enjoy the walking tour, please advise the tour guide a minimum of 7 days before the tour and they will confirm availability of free child places. Dogs are welcome on the walking tours but won't be able to access the inside of the museum.

There are toilets at the Mining Museum

Accessibility: Tours are accessible depending on needs and the route can be adapted by the tour guide for those with mobility considerations. (However access to the engine house is only via a steep flight of stairs).
